Trip Overview

Overview

Lobuche Peak Climbing is a thrilling adventure that takes mountaineers to the majestic Himalayas of Nepal. Standing tall at an elevation of 6,119 meters (20,075 feet), Lobuche Peak also offers a challenging yet rewarding experience for climbers looking to push their limits and witness breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The journey begins in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, where climbers will make necessary preparations and acquire climbing permits. From there, a short but scenic flight takes them to Lukla, the gateway to the Everest region. The trekking route follows the famous Everest Base Camp trail, passing through picturesque Sherpa villages, lush forests, and suspension bridges that span roaring rivers. As climbers approach Lobuche Base Camp, they will be captivated by the awe-inspiring landscapes that include towering peaks like Ama Dablam and Nuptse. Experienced guides and porters will also accompany the climbers throughout the journey, ensuring their safety and providing valuable insights into the local culture and environment. The ascent to Lobuche Peak requires technical skills and acclimatization to the high altitude. Climbers will undergo thorough training and practice sessions to familiarize themselves with equipment like crampons, ice axes, and ropes. The summit day is the most challenging part of the climb, involving steep sections of snow and ice. However, reaching the top of Lobuche Peak brings an unparalleled sense of achievement and rewards climbers with panoramic views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and numerous other peaks. The descent follows a similar route back to Lukla, with memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. The journey is not only physically demanding but also culturally enriching, as climbers have the opportunity to interact with the Sherpa community and learn about their traditions and way of life.

For maximum health benefits, we recommend you take plenty of liquids, such as green, lemon, and ginger tea, hot lemon, and garlic soup (must). Best time for Lobuche East climbing

The best time for Lobuche Peak climbing depends on the weather. You can find weather forecasts in the Everest region, but these are unreliable as weather forecasts at high altitudes are very difficult.

Though you can trek in the Everest region, throughout the year, treks are easier with clear skies during certain months.

Spring and autumn are great seasons for Lobuche East climbing as the skies are clear from dawn to dusk, the temperature is just right, and there are minimum chances of rain. Clear skies enable you to enjoy the scenery without obstruction. Here are the weather conditions at high altitudes.

January to February

This is the coldest period with heavy snowfall, especially during January, so we do not conduct this trip in January. However, beginning in late February, the days warm up, and admirable clear skies show up, but the nighttime will still be cold. It is perfectly fine to climb Lobuche East in February unless you suffer from cold allergies.

Temperature: 15°C to -15°C

March to April

This is one of the best times for Lobuche East climbing, allowing you to enjoy stunning views of the Himalayas ranges, glaciers, lakes, and other landscapes. Beginning in March, the weather warms up, and all flora and fauna dormant in winter become alive, feeding and breeding in the sun-kissed and pleasant temperatures. Temperatures start to go up considerably in the mid of March, and with clear skies, snow peaks look mesmerizing.

Temperature: 18°C to -12°C

May to June

Lobuche East climbing is also favorable during May and June, just before the monsoon enters Nepal, and lasts until mid-August. May to June provides a great window for a pleasurable Lobuche East peak climb. The mix of spring and summer makes the trek much more enjoyable.

Temperature: 25°C to -5°C.

July to August

Monsoon becomes active, and the rainfall hits its peak during this time, mainly at altitudes below 3,500m. Due to heavy rain, flights from and to Lukla can get delayed. Moreover, the trails are wet and slippery. So, Friendship World Trek does not conduct Lobuche East climbing during July and August.

Temperature: 27°C to 5°C

September to October

September and October are the best months for Lobuche East climbing. As the monsoon ends, a perfect trekking climate begins. The temperature can go as high as 20 degrees in the daytime and dip to 5 degrees at night.

This season attracts most climbers, as clear skies provide stunning views of the snow peaks and cool temperatures make trekking comfortable. If you want to enjoy picture-perfect views without any worries or interruption, it is the best time to climb Lobuche. Some of the biggest Nepali festivals – Dashain, Tihar, Chhat – fall in these months, which adds a festive mood in all parts of Nepal.

Temperature: 20°C to 5°C

November to December

The winter begins, and snowfalls start in the Himalayas region. By December it gets tough to trek, but it is a great time to climb Lobuche East during November, as November days are cool with clear skies. Friendship World Trek does not organize Lobuche East climbing during December.

Temperature: 18°C to -10 °C

The weather in the Himalayas is unpredictable and changes quickly.

Acclimatization during Lobuche Peak Climbing

Our Lobuche Peak climbing package includes days allocated for acclimatization. It is crucial to acclimatize while trekking/climbing high elevations to minimize the chances of altitude sickness. Altitude sickness is common among trekkers, but severe altitude sickness is serious and needs immediate treatment. For this reason, you must need adequate insurance for Lobuche Peak Climbing.

You will be acclimatizing in two places – Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. Namche Bazaar is a bustling Khumbu town, complete with wifi-linked cafes, restaurants, bars, bakeries, and shops that sell you anything from trek gear and equipment to souvenirs.  You can explore Namche on this day or even trek to Khunde and Khumjung – typical Sherpa villages.

When acclimatizing at Dingboche, you can enjoy the views of Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, Island Peak, and Makalu. Dingboche also hosts one of the world’s highest internet cafes.

Our trekking guides have years of experience handling altitude sickness and are first-aid trained. So, your well-being is in safe hands. In case of severe altitude sickness, you need to descend immediately, and we deploy a helicopter for rescue  (paid by insurance). If someone in your team is ill or injured, your trek leader will decide whether to continue the trek or descend immediately based on the overall situation.

Trip Grade Medical and Health

Lobuche East Peak Climbing is a challenging yet rewarding trek/climb. You will trek for 5 to 7 hours a day, depending on the destination, while taking regular breaks to soak in the views. Like other treks or mountain climbs, the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the activities. Previous trek/climbing experience will be helpful but not necessary. However, if you suffer from heart, lung, or blood diseases, we suggest you consult your doctor before booking.

Climbing group/single

We organize group as well as private climbs/treks. If you have your group you will be eligible for a discount. The bigger your group is, the more discount you can get. However, if we arrange a group, you will not get any discount. We can handle all group sizes and for groups larger than 11 trekkers/climbers we add an assistant guide.

Electricity for recharge, water during the trekking

All the lodges on the way to Lobuche Peak Climbing have electricity, and you can recharge your camera/cell phone at these lodges. However, you might need to pay for this service.

You can buy packed mineral water from local lodges and en-route shops, but we recommend you carry a water bottle and fill it with boiled water, which you can buy from tea houses/lodges. If you want we can provide water purification pills to make water drinkable. We strongly advise you not to drink water from local rivers, taps, or wells, as the water might not be drinkable.

A typical day

Every day ushers in a new, exciting experience as you enjoy the landscapes, take pictures, explore new places, and try local food. Our team consisting of a trekking guide, climbing Sherpa, and porters, will accompany you to ensure your trip is comfortable and enjoyable.

The day begins with an early morning breakfast. Then, the trek begins, and the exact time differs according to the length of the trek and trail conditions. You will have lunch around midday, often mid-way to the next destination. After lunch, you will rest for about an hour and continue on the trails. The afternoon walk will normally be short, around 2 or 3 hours.

After you reach your destination for that day, you can snack on your extra dietary food and explore the new place. We will serve you dinner at around seven. After dinner, your trek/climbing leader will brief you about the next day’s plan. Then, you will have plenty of free time for yourself. During this time, you can entertain yourself by playing board games such as cards, monopoly, or chess. If you have books, you can read them or discuss your experience with fellow travelers. Most of our guests also show interest in learning a few fun Nepali words from our crew. Then, when you are sleepy, you can head to bed.

During the climbing days, the itinerary is less fixed as climbing depends much on the climber, weather conditions, and routes. Your climbing Sherpa will always look out for safer options. You might have to cross steep ice rocks, but you need not be worried. Our guides will arrange a safe climb. The Sherpas will fix new ropes at difficult sections of the path.

Communication during the trip

During the Lobuche Peak Climbing, you can remain in contact with your friends and families using the internet service available at the tea houses/lodges you will be staying. However, you may need to pay a small fee to use the service. At high altitudes, we will use mobile/cell phones to communicate. Friendship World Trek remains in contact with all its trekking teams at least once a day via the trek lead.

If you wish, you can easily buy a local SIM in Kathmandu. However, based on the service provider, the mobile signals may not be strong enough at high altitudes.

You can pay a small fee to use the Wi-Fi available at the lodges/teahouses.

Extra personal expenses during the trek/climb

Though the Lobuche Peak Climbing package covers most costs during the trip, it does not cover all costs. Meals and accommodations in Kathmandu before and after the trek/climb are not covered, as there are plenty of hotels/lodges to suit most tastes and budgets. We do not want to restrict your preferences.

Moreover, you will need to bring money for several things such as visa processing, travel insurance purchase, beverages (hot (tea /coffee), cold and alcoholic drinks), souvenirs, snacks, tips to crew members, etc. We estimate that you will need USD 10 to 20 per trekking day for personal expenses.

We recommend you carry cash (major currencies), which you can easily exchange for Nepali Rupees.

Lobuche East Peak Climbing Travel insurance

The trip grade for Lobuche peak climbing is the most challenging, and the trek/climb comes with certain risks associated with high-altitude journeys, such as potential altitude sickness. The weather in high altitudes can change quickly, making treks more difficult. Hence, adequate insurance is compulsory for Lobuche East Peak Climbing.

All climbers must provide a copy of their insurance before departing for the trek. The insurance must cover helicopter rescue up to 6,000m, in addition to treatment costs. It is important because trek regions do not have adequate health treatment centers. So, in case of a health emergency, we might need to transport you to Kathmandu.

If you need, we can recommend insurers based on our previous clients’ experiences. However, we do not sell insurance in any shape or form. We request trekkers provide their detailed insurance information after booking the trek. In emergencies, we will use your insurance certificate and other informational documents for rescue.

Before buying a travel insurance policy, you must call the insurers and make sure they provide helicopter rescue at altitudes up to 6,000m. You should not just rely on what insurance companies say on their website.

Passport and visa Info

All foreigners, except Indians, must acquire a visa to enter Nepal. But citizens from most countries are eligible for an on-arrival visa at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or along immigration checkpoints along Nepal-India, or Nepal-Tibet border.

For visa application, you will need a passport with at least six months of validity, visa fees, and a passport-size photo. The current visa fee is USD 50 for a 30-day stay. SAARC (India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Maldives) and Chinese citizens can get free visas with some limitations. Children under 10 get free visas.

However, if you belong to any of these countries – Nigeria, Ethiopia, Iraq, Palestine, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cameroon, Somalia, Liberia, and Afghanistan – you may not get an on-arrival visa. So, you must contact your local Nepali embassy for the visa.

The Nepal government has the authority to change visa rules without prior notice. Hence, for the latest visa information, please visit https://www.immigration.gov.np/.

Money Exchange

Nepali Rupee (NPR) is Nepal’s currency.
(1 USD = ~ Rs.130 NPR)

You can easily exchange major foreign currencies through banks and legitimate money exchanges in Kathmandu and all-over Thamel. The money exchanges display their current rates publicly. Some hotels also exchange small amounts of cash. If you have Indian Rupees, ensure that you only have INR notes of 100 and 2,000, as these are only legal in Nepal.

Despite the security advantage of traveler’s cheques, we advise you to bring cash and exchange them through money exchanges. If you use banks for exchanging money, you will have to pay a commission of 4 percent or more, depending on the bank.

You can also withdraw cash (in Nepali Rupees) from ATMs all over Kathmandu. Several of these ATMs are open 24/7. However, you need to pay a fee of Rs. 500 to withdraw Rs.35,000 using a foreign card.

Please exchange your currency in Kathmandu, as there are no currency exchanges in trek regions, and the locals only honor Nepali currency. We estimate you will need around USD 10 to 20 per trek day.

Most Asian banks do not accept old, torn, or faded foreign currencies. So ensure that you have new, clean and crisp notes.

How much luggage can I bring to Lobuche East Peak Climbing?

Our package includes the cost of porters to carry your luggage, but your luggage weight limit is 9 kg per person. We will assign one porter for every two trekkers, but we do not allow our porters to carry more than 18 kg of luggage. If you need, we can certainly provide one porter per person as well. We advise you to bring only the bare essentials to the trek. You can store your excess luggage at your hotel or Friendship World Trek storage for the duration of your hike. Friendship World Trek provides this service free of cost. Please note that we will confirm your luggage during the trek briefing to ensure you have not missed packing essential items.

Lobuche East Peak Climbing Safety

We guarantee client safety, security, and satisfaction, and safety is of our utmost concern. To remain safe, we carry the necessary gear, equipment, and first aid kits. Moreover, we use only the best equipment available in the market. Our leaders and guides are extensively first-aid trained.

You will climb with a Sherpa guide who has summited Lobuche Peak multiple times. If any team member falls sick due to the altitude, the trek leader decides whether to continue the trek or descend immediately. Furthermore, we will trek/climb together for group safety.

Responsible travel

We strongly believe in protecting the environment against the adverse effects of tourism. Unsustainable tourism activities are detrimental to tourists, the entire tourism industry, and locals living in tourist regions. So, Friendship World Trek works with Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP) to organize eco-friendly, sustainable, and fulfilling treks that benefit travelers as well as the locals living in tourist regions.

We dispose of the waste properly and encourage trekkers to manage their waste as far as possible. Furthermore, we take special care to conserve and avoid polluting water. We encourage our clients to carry a water bottle instead of packed water. We aim to leave the campsites in better condition than when we arrived.
